Bill’s Story:

Leadership 2020 is honored to have Dr. William G. Spady as one of our Associates. Bill is internationally recognized as one of the major theorists, writers, developers, and leaders in future-focused outcome-based educational reform efforts worldwide.

One good way to get to know Bill is to read his books. Published in 1998, Paradigm Lost: Reclaiming America’s Educational Future is partly autobiographical. Bill recounts his own history in American education as he traces the development of our national school system over the past 200 years. In Total Leaders: Applying the Best Future-Focused Change Strategies to Education Bill and his co-writer Charles J. (Chuck) Schwahn present a model for total leadership that draws on the wisdom of over 100 top organizational theorists.

In March 1999 Bette Moore heard Bill speak during a panel on “Education in the 21st Century” at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Convention in San Francisco. She had also recently read Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More than IQ by Daniel Goleman and Synchronicity: The Inner Path of Leadership by Joseph Jawarski. As a fifth grade teacher, she began to realize that the 10-year old students in her classes would begin to assume positions of leadership by the year 2020. She realized that Bill’s Total Leaders model was the perfect tool for teachers as they model leadership for our future. Bill and Bette again met at the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators (COSA) Conference in April 1999 where they began discuss the application of the Total Leaders model to the elementary and middle school classroom.

Bill continued to develop his thinking about educational reform, and, in 2001 he published his most recent book, Beyond Counterfeit Refoms: Forging an Authentic Future for All Learners. Realizing that “Total Leaders” must also be “Total Learners,” Bill describes a powerful curriculum framework that has far-reaching implications for lasting educational reform worldwide. The Five C’s Curriculum is a direct extension of the “Essence of Total Learning” described in Beyond Counterfeit Reforms.
